A slope is rarely just one wall

On a steep block, one tall wall almost never makes sense. It’s usually a series of terraces, each one carrying the ground above it, stepped down the block so you end up with usable flat ground at more than one level rather than a single retained cliff face.

We work out the terracing, the steps between levels, drainage and access before anything is dug: how many walls, how tall each one is, where the load goes, and how you’ll actually move through the finished garden. That planning is the difference between a slope that becomes three usable levels and one that becomes an expensive mistake.

Backyards falling sharply to a rear fence or side boundary, where the finished levels have to work with the house and the neighbours either side.

Because we run our own machinery, the excavation, the wall and the finished garden are all one job with one team responsible for it, not a separate excavation contractor working to someone else’s plan. That matters most on tight or awkward blocks, where the machine that fits the gate and the sequence that keeps the bank stable while you’re mid-dig are as important as the wall itself.

Drainage matters more on a slope

Water runs downhill and it doesn’t stop at your retaining wall. On a graded block, every terrace has to shed the water that reaches it rather than pass the pressure on to the wall below. We build a slotted agricultural drain at the base of every wall in the terrace, with weep holes and extra subsurface drainage on the wetter ones, all running to a proper outlet rather than the wall below it.

Get this wrong on a slope and it isn’t one wall that fails. It’s the whole terrace, from the top down.

Engineering, permits and cost on a terraced site

Terraced walls are more likely to need engineering than a single low wall, simply because there’s more height and more load spread across the block. As registered building practitioners we organise the engineer’s design and the building permit where they’re needed, and build to the approved drawings.

Cost follows the same logic as any wall: material, height, length, access and excavation, multiplied across however many terraces the site needs. We’ll walk the site with you and give you an itemised quote for the whole terrace, not one wall at a time.

Can you build a retaining wall on a steep or sloping block?

Yes. Steep and awkward blocks are a large part of what we do. On a slope a retaining wall is usually a set of terraces rather than one wall, designed so each level carries the ground above it, with steps, drainage and access planned in.

How many retaining walls does a sloping block need?

It depends on the total drop and how much usable flat ground you want at each level. We work this out at the site visit by measuring the slope and talking through what you want the space to do, then quote the whole terrace as one job.

Do you need special equipment for steep sites?

Often, yes. We use our own mini excavator and bobcat for site cuts, which lets us work blocks with steep grades, poor truck access or soft, wet ground without bringing in a separate excavation contractor.

Is a terraced wall more expensive than one tall wall?

Terracing usually costs less overall than one very tall engineered wall, and it’s the safer, more usable outcome. One tall wall over a couple of metres needs heavier engineering and gives you a cliff, not usable ground.

How do you stop a terrace from failing in wet conditions?

Drainage at every level, not just the bottom wall. Each terrace gets its own agricultural drain running to a proper outlet, so water is shed as it moves down the slope instead of building up pressure on the wall below.
